India have created history, becoming the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times and the first team to defend their crown. Winning the trophy as host team was another feather in India’s cap .
India literally annihilated New Zealand by a huge margin of 96 runs before a record gathering of over one lakh spectators at world’s largest cricket stadium at Ahmedabad . The Kiwis were blown away by the batting genius of Indians , spearheaded by calm & composed Sanju Sampson & sheer bowling class of Jaspreet Bumrah . It was a total paisa wasool final for cheering and jeering spectators . India raced to a mammoth total of 255 for 5 with brilliant contributions by Sanju Samson 89 off 46 balls, Ishan Kishan 54 in 25 balls and Abhishek Sharma who returned to form scoring 52 in 21 balls .
After fireworks by Samson , Abhishek & Ishan , it was Bumrah ‘s stunning bowling performance , which sealed fate of Kiwis . In 4 overs , Bumrah produced a match winning spell of 4 for 15 . He was ably supported by Axar Patel who bagged 3 wickets conceding 27 runs . Bumrah had reserved his best for the final destroying Kiwis like a hurricane . If you remember , Bumrah had removed Harry Brook in thursday's semi-final with a pace-off ball and then conceded just six runs in one over and eight in another at the death, nailing his yorkers to pretty much extinguish England's hopes of making the final.
He is a cricketing genius and a magician.
Jaspreet Bumrah emerged as player of the final . Sanju Samson was declared Man of the tournament .
Like all good underdogs, New Zealand are capable of winning games they are not expected to. Few backed them to overcome an unbeaten South Africa in the semi-finals but they pulverised them, off the back of Finn Allen's T20 World Cup-record 33-ball ton.
African coach Shukri Conrad and captain Aiden Markram described their 2026 T20 World Cup semifinal loss to New Zealand as a "bloody walloping" rather than a "choke," with Conrad noting the team was outplayed and never had a "sniff" in the game. Despite the disappointment, both praised the team's earlier tournament form and pride in the campaign.
I wouldn't mind breaking a few hearts," said New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner on the eve of the T20 World Cup final against India in their opponents' homeland.
In the end, though, the only hearts that were broken were New Zealand's. Again.
Four World Cup finals for the Black Caps now and four defeats. Two in the 50-over arena, two in T20.
For India , Void created by the retirement of veterans and match winners , Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma was suitably filled by Sampson & Abhishek .
Samson ended this T20 World Cup with 97 not out and two brutal knocks of 89. Abhishek rebounded from three ducks in a row to start the event with an 18-ball fifty in the final. Tilak Varma, who collared England's Jofra Archer in the semi-finals, is also a top talent.India's batting depth is frightening. It often boggles the mind that Yashasvi Jaiswal is not a fulcrum of the white-ball sides. He may become that in time. Then there is 14-year-old IPL record-breaker Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Sooner or later, you sense he will step in .
In the super 8 stage , South Africa , India , West Indies and Zimbabwe made it to group 1 while England , New Zealand , Pakistan and Shri Lanka made it to group B .
In group 1 , SouthAfrica with 6 points and India with 4 points made it to semifinals . In group 2 , England advanced to last four stage winning all their 3 matches with 6 points . Both New Zealand & Pakistan finished with 3 points each but Kiwis made it to semifinals on the basis of better runrate .
Sky Sports' Nasser Hussain said: "India's formula is pretty simple.A strong batting line‑up full of powerful hitters that will get you an above‑par score and a bowler in Bumrah, who makes a below‑par score probably enough. He's an absolute genius, and when you combine those two elements, they're virtually unbeatable."
New Zealand once again won hearts but not the trophy. India once again broke hearts and won the trophy.
The head coach of Indian team , Gautam Gambhir emphases that , “ Milestones do not matter, Trophies Do “.
The Indian skipper Surya Kumar defined Winning gold at 2028 Olympics as his next goal . And also , T20 World Cup the same year .
According to cricketing genius , Sachin Tendulkar team India were totally deserving & rightful winners . What a fantastic performance .
Just after the Trophy ceremony , Arshdeep chided Gambhir in a twitter message , “ oye paaji , kadi has bhi liya karo “.
Let us analyse performance of match winning Indian players:
Bumrah : Makes opposition feel they have just 16 overs . He saved his best for the final taking 4 wickets for 15 runs to dismantle Kiwis in the final . His awe inspiring economy rate in power play 5.9 , in middle overs 6.3 & in death overs just 6.6 . Truly amazing stuff .
Samson : played just 5 games & still finished as player of the tournament . Struggle against off spin by top order opened the doors for him . Three successive high voltage innings in the knockout stage ,made him central figure in the title run .
Ishan Kishan : Showed his class in the group stage by scoring 77 off 40 balls , one of his best knocks . In the final , he hammered 54 in 25 balls .
Abhishek Sharma : India persisted with him despite his poor form throughout the tournament . He came good in the final smashing fastest half century of the tournament .
Axar Patel : he also produced his best form in the final bagging 3 wickets . Bhumrah & Patel brought Kiwis on their knees .
When India was busy rewriting history , the internet witnessed hilarious banter between state police departments . As. Samson , Abhishek and Ishan turned the Ahmedabad skyline into a landing strip for cricket ball , Delhi police fired first salvo on twitter , ‘ you may get ball disappearance complaints from the Kiwis . No need to worry…. it is our batsmen sending the ball to the stands . The tweet went viral faster than a Bumrah bouncer . But the UP police was not the one to let Delhi police have all the fun . They immediately came up with , ‘ Case Status Update . ‘ Earlier Complaint : Ball going missing . New Complaint : Entire Batting lineup going missing . Ahmedabad police joined the playful banter : our assessment : Thanks for bringing it to our attention . The matter has been reported to higher police authorities . This online banter immediately caught attention of cricket fans .
Most of the experts criticised Kiwis for poor performance . The former Pakistan pacer , Mohammad Amir , attributed much of India's success to New Zealand's poor bowling, which failed to apply pressure, allowing India to dictate the game.
Piers Morgan (British Broadcaster): Criticized New Zealand's performance, calling it a "one-sided debacle" and noting that the Kiwis "went missing when it most mattered".
Expert Consensus on India: Many experts praised India's, comprehensive, approach, with praise for the bowlers and explosive batting . The victory was described as a clinical, fearless and ruthless
display . Some analysts referred to the Indian team as a "GOAT" (Greatest of All Time) side, noting they hadn't lost a series or tournament since August 2023 and added immense depth with players like Samson , Ishan Kishan Abhishek Sharma , and Tilak Varma.New Zealand's Journey: Despite the final loss, some experts acknowledged New Zealand's impressive run, especially their semi-final performance where they defeated South Africa by nine wickets. Before the final, some experts debated whether to drop Abhishek Sharma for Rinku Singh due to a lean patch, but India stuck with their winning combination.
Analysts noted that for teams like South Africa and New Zealand, knockout games in India are heavily influenced by "mental conditioning" and "emotional control" rather than just technical skill . Some, like Shoaib Akhtar a former Pakistan player , argued that India's financial and on-field dominance is creating an uneven playing field, while others praised the team for their "unmatchable talent"
